I'm Anxious About Creating Art, What Should I Do?

anxiety art creation art process

As art teachers for decades, we have seen so many art students get really stressed out about starting an artwork. If you're feeling anxious about creating art, here are some strategies to help ease that anxiety:

Start Small:

  1. Simple Exercises: Begin with small, low-pressure exercises or doodles. Gradually build confidence by starting with easy, non-intimidating projects. Zentangles are a fun way to start and loosen up.

  2. Short Sessions: Set a timer for short art sessions to alleviate the pressure of extended periods of creating.

Explore Different Mediums:

  1. Experiment: Try different art mediums or techniques. Exploring various mediums might help you find one that feels more comfortable.

  2. Playful Exploration: Engage in art activities without any expectations or specific goals, focusing on the joy of exploration.

Focus on the Process:

  1. Mindful Creation: Practice mindfulness while creating art. Focus on the process rather than the end result, allowing yourself to enjoy each step.

  2. Accept Imperfections: Embrace imperfections as part of the creative journey. Accept that mistakes are natural and can lead to unique outcomes.

Manage Expectations:

  1. Set Realistic Goals: Avoid setting high expectations for your art. Instead, set realistic and achievable goals to reduce pressure.

  2. Redefine Success: Consider success as the act of creating itself, rather than the perceived quality of the final artwork. It's all about the PROCESS of creating, not necessarily the PRODUCT,

Address Perfectionism:

  1. Challenge Perfectionism: Challenge the need for perfection. Allow yourself to create imperfectly and see it as a valuable part of the process. Nobody is perfect.

  2. Embrace Vulnerability: Embrace vulnerability in your art. Recognize that expressing yourself through art is a courageous act.

Seek Support:

  1. Community Engagement: Connect with other artists or art communities for support, encouragement, and shared experiences. That is why we created the Online Studio Arts CREATIVE COMMUNITY. It is a place to share, get support, ask questions and connect. Join the fun!

  2. Professional Guidance: Consider seeking guidance from an art therapist, counselor, or art instructor specializing in anxiety or creative blocks.

Self-Care:

  1. Take Breaks: Take breaks when feeling overwhelmed. Step away from your art to recharge and relax.

  2. Practice Self-Compassion: Be kind to yourself. Acknowledge your efforts and progress, even if it feels small.

Seek Professional Help:

  1. Therapeutic Support: If anxiety significantly affects your ability to create or your well-being, consider seeking professional help from a therapist or counselor.

Remember, anxiety about creating art is common, and it's okay to feel this way. Start by taking small steps and finding approaches that make the process more enjoyable and less daunting. Be patient and compassionate with yourself as you navigate through this process.

We hope that you take this advice, start small, be kind to yourself and make sure you HAVE FUN!!
